Don't Take it Personally

One of the first things that I was told when I started in the profession of direct support was that I should not take things personally.  It would make it harder to do your job.

I don't recall having a struggle with taking things personally. My co-workers might tell you a different story.

Today another direct support person is leaving their support position, telling us that it was a bad match. We were diligent in selecting a person that could make a difference in this persons life, as they have a "reputation" that precedes them everywhere they go.

We missed the mark on several points.  The support staff took things personally, they were measuring success with the wrong ruler.

The person served is living someone else's life. The goal that was put in place is not their goal, but that of the support team.

So how do you not take it personally when it is your goal and the person you are supporting is not cooperating?

It is not your goal, never should be!

Stop, Look and Listen.
