WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The power of a name and its value has long been immortalized in prose, poetry, and religious ceremony. Everyone recognizes himself or herself by name.

Parents to be spend months debating the name of their soon to be born child. Little girls dream of what they will name their children. My name was chosen when my mother was age 12.

Your name is important. For some it is the tie to someone that meant a lot to your family, a name to look up and live up to.

When you experience life with a developmental disability your name means so much more. If your given name is Robert and your paid support provider calls you Bobby, what are they really saying?

Remember I am someone’s sister, brother, aunt, or uncle and old enough to be your mother – use my given name when you address me.

What’s in a name?

Dignity and Respect
