Life Balance

So much is written about life balance and well-being, that my thoughts turn to the direct support professional and how it applies here.  I wonder how it really works for those of you who are working two or more jobs to keep the roof over your head. When you are putting in as much over time as your regular schedule, how does the life balance work for you? When my sole responsibility was as a direct support professional I ended up working four different jobs. There was no life balance there.
For our own health and well-being, that of our families, and the people that we serve, we need to find that balance between our work and our life. Jeff Davidson, work life balance expert offers the following six tips on perfecting that work-life merry-go-round.

1.       Self – the most important part of the equation. It is crucial that you take care of yourself.
That means getting proper sleep, exercise and nutrition.
2.       Time – Create goals for the few hours that you have to give, both personally and professionally, discern what is important and urgent.
3.       Stress-More people, more noise and more distractions require each of us to become more tranquil and comfortable working in pressure filled situations. Focus on one thing at a time to decrease stress.
4.       Change- it is everywhere, adopting new methods, adapting the old ways.  Effective change management involves offering periodic, concentrated effort so you’re not overwhelmed.
5.       Technology- Ensure that technology serves rather than abuses you. Don’t be a slave to your devices. Take a break from electronics.
6.       Leisure – Time off is vital to the human experience. Too much of the same leisure activity can lead to monotony. Try some new things with friends and family. Get out of your comfort zone.

These tips may seem at first impossible for some of you.  Set the goal.  Implement one of these steps for the next 30 days and see what a difference it will make.  Let us know!
